Wire Sculptures

WIRE SCULPTURES

In 2023, a friend took me to the Ruth Asawa Through Line exhibit at the Whitney Museum in New York.  I was stunned by Asawa’s work—especially by her wire sculptures.  Asawa had taken hard-edged, industrial wire and transformed it into undulating, three dimensional shapes.  I began to wonder if I could do something similar with photographs.

I knew I had to start with images that included closely spaced lines, somewhat like Asawa’s wires.  A few of my choices were obvious, such as starting with an image of a wing from Calatrava’s Oculus or of the ornamental cast-iron railings in Burnham and Root’s The Rookery in Chicago.  Other choices were not so obvious, such as using an image of the Brooklyn Bridge or of a hallway in the University of Waterloo’s Engineering 5 Building.  And in one case, I started with a landscape of Nevada’s Valley of Fire, or, in another case, a picture of a rock that had captured my attention.  My hope is that my “wire sculptures” will capture your attention.
