The Colors of Mexico

THE COLORS OF MEXICO

I see lines—lines that form patterns and lines that suggest shapes.  Conventional wisdom would have it that black and white photography would be the right art form for me.  When color is removed, the lights and darks emphasize lines, shapes and patterns.  I followed that conventional wisdom for years—that is, until I went to Mexico City.

Mexico City was my epiphany.  It was there I learned that lines and geometry are not necessarily diminished by color, but they can be accentuated by color.  Not only are there lines between different colors, but light and shadows on colored surfaces also create lines.  In particular, the work of Mexican architects Luis Barragán and Ricardo Legorreta inspired me.  Both Barragán and Legorreta use the vibrant pinks, yellows and blues of their culture in their architecture.  I worshipped their architecture with my camera.
