Tribute to Frank Gehry

TRIBUTE TO FRANK GEHRY

Frank Gehry’s architecture is a photographer’s dream—whether it’s the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Peter B Lewis Building in Cleveland, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) in Toronto, or the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas. Resembling abstract sculptures more than conventional buildings, Gehry’s work makes playful, expressive use of materials. I was captivated by the way light danced across the curved surfaces of his soaring metal panels outside, and across the sinuous wood and billowing plaster walls within.

Asked about his design motivation, Gehry once said, “I was looking for a way to express movement.” And movement is exactly what I saw in his architecture—bending, stretching, reaching, and twisting—everywhere my camera turned. I worshiped Frank Gehry’s architecture through my lens, whether his medium was metal, plaster, or wood.
